CURL POLICE HATE TO SEE ME COMING: HERE ARE FIVE UNHINGED THINGS THAT TRANSFORM MY WAVY CURLY HAIR

I used to hate my hair. I think almost every wavy or curly girl in this world has gone through the same canon event. They used to hate their hair and they didn't know how to take care of it. And that's what happened to me too. I spent years straightening my hair, thinking it needed to be fixed. I didn't know I had any texture in there. I only knew that my hair was so puffy, frizzy and unmanageable. I did keratin treatments for most of my early life.

But eventually I got tired of hating my hair, and it started falling off too because of all the damage. That was my wake-up call. I decided to start actually taking care of it, and that's when I discovered that I actually had wavy curly hair. It took me quite a while to see real progress, and I know it would have been faster if I wasn't so strict about following the Curly Girl Method. So if you are, this article is not for you.

Having said that, here are the five most unhinged things that transformed my frizzy hair into beautiful wavy curly hair.

1.DETANGLING ON DRY HAIR

Yes, you read that right. I used to detangle my hair wet and I got so much hair shedding until I switched to dry detangling. Detangling on dry hair means my hair is in a stronger state and I don't get as much breakage anymore. You have to do this gently before washing your hair, and use a gentle detangling brush that doesn't create any pulling or tugging like this one.

Another thing, if you have a lot of knots, you can use an oil so that your hair has some slip in it, which means it'll be easier for your brush to glide through. I usually use oils designed for pre-wash treatments. Here are some of my favorites.

2.USING SULFATES

I used to skip sulfates completely and my scalp absolutely hated it. So after a while of going sulfate-free, I started using them again. Not every day, just occasionally whenever I feel like my scalp is dirty. By using sulfates, I reset my scalp and hair, which means the products that I use will work and penetrate better into my hair shafts, giving me the best results possible.

This works really well whenever my itchy scalp starts acting up.

3.SKIPPING CONDITIONER AND HAIR MASK

YUUUPPP…. I used to over-moisturize my hair by using a lot of conditioning products all at once! Think conditioner, hair mask, curl cream and leave-in all together…. If you have dry, thicker or coily hair, this might be beneficial for you. But that's not the case for me since I have fine wavy curly hair. So right now I skip most of the conditioning products and focus on using styling products with hold.

At the beginning though, when my hair was very damaged, I used to deep condition every week. At first it was good, but as my hair got healthier, I should have adjusted how often I was conditioning. So keep this in mind!

This 3 in 1 mask can be used as a regular conditioner, hair mask, and leave-in! My all time fave!

This hairmask is such a life saver whenever my curls feel extra dry.

4.STYLING ON DAMP HAIR

I had always been told to style on soaking, dripping wet hair. But guess what! My products just got diluted every time I styled on soaking wet hair and that was such a waste. I switched to styling on wet (not soaking) and also damp hair and my results got a lot better.

5.NOT REFRESHING IT EVERY SINGLE DAY

Look, at the beginning of my hair journey, I was so embarrassed of my frizz that I would rewet and refresh my hair the next day, and it did nothing good for my hair. Right now, I mostly just embrace the frizz as the days go on. And if I notice too much frizz, I refresh it on dry hair with a foam, or I spot refresh with a lightweight oil. It always works wonders! I just glaze the foam on the frizzy parts and scrunch, then air-dry or diffuse.

Those are just some of the things I wish I knew when starting my wavy curly hair journey. It would have made everything a lot easier!
