YOUR CURLY HAIR ROUTINE IS RUINING YOUR WAVY HAIR: HERE ARE SOME CURLY TO WAVY SWAPS THAT YOU CAN IMPLEMENT TODAY

This article may contain affiliate links.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • Your hair is constantly being weighed down by the products you use

  • Your curls drop after a few hours

  • You get product buildup easily

  • You can never seem to find the right routine or products

  • Your curls are wonky

Your hair routine is probably what's holding your wavy curly hair back from thriving!

Here's why: we've been constantly told to do and use certain things that come from the Curly Girl Method, and this method doesn't work for everyone! Especially if you have a fine texture and/or your hair type is on the wavier side.

The good news is, you are not alone and this is definitely reversible! Here are some curly to wavy swaps that you can implement TODAY, or whenever you next decide to style your hair.

1. INSTEAD OF A HEAVY CURL CREAM, USE A LIGHTWEIGHT LEAVE-IN

YESSS…. Curl creams are often too heavy for fine wavy curly hair! Opt for a lightweight leave-in, and preferably one that has hydrolyzed protein in it. (Why? I'll talk more about the "Moisture Protein Balance in my next article!) BUT if you still have a curl cream and wish to continue using it, that's okay too! Just make sure to use it in a tiny tiny amount because curl creams really weigh down fine hair easily.

2. INSTEAD OF STYLING ON SOAKING WET HAIR, STYLE ON WET HAIR AND DAMP HAIR

YUUPPPP…. We've been told that styling on soaking wet hair is better, but when your hair is fine, it just dilutes the products so much that they end up on the ground lol and you absolutely don't want that. So try styling on wet hair instead. And if your hair is drying out, you can always spray more water using a water spray, especially when scrunching. This ensures that the products actually stay on your hair.

What about damp hair? You can add more product on damp hair after plopping or mid-diffusing. This will give your hair a nice cast that makes your results last longer.

3. INSTEAD OF A LIGHT HOLD GEL, USE A STRONG HOLD GEL

Light hold gels are coolllll but when you have fine or wavy hair you want as much hold as possible to keep those waves and curls from dropping to the ground! You can definitely still use light or medium hold gel, just make sure to pair it with another styler such as mousse and foam (This is what I do most of the time).

4. INSTEAD OF A CURL CREAM AND GEL COMBO, USE A LEAVE-IN + GEL + MOUSSE OR FOAM COMBO

Yes! Focus on lightweight products and products with hold. The combination of gel and mousse or foam will give your curls extra hold, making them even more defined and longer lasting.

5. Instead of using an oil to scrunch out the crunch, try a silk scarf

LOOK. I LOVE MY OILS. But I know they don't always work for us folks with fine or wavy curly hair. That's why, if you've been having the issues I mentioned above, it's worth trying to scrunch out the crunch without any oil and see if it helps. Just because everyone does it and you are told to do it, does not mean it's right for you. Always experiment with what works and what doesn't for your hair!
