BEST 5 STRONG HOLD GELS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR WAVY CURLY HAIR LAST ALL WEEK

Every time someone comes to me saying their waves or curls barely make it past day 1, the first thing I ask is: are you using a gel? Most of the time, the answer is no. And the other times, the answer is yes, but the gel just is not strong enough to hold those curls in place.

That was my mistake too when I first started my natural wavy curly hair journey. I was so focused on conditioning my hair and making it soft (which eventually worked!) that I completely forgot about hold. Without a product that actually locks your curl pattern in place, your style just will not last.

That is why today I am sharing five strong hold gels that genuinely changed my wavy curly hair game. I have personally tested all of these and they have given me great results. And even though the prices vary, the hold across all of them is comparably strong.

1. Giovanni L.A. Hold Styling Gel

This was the first strong hold gel I ever tried, and there is a reason it has a cult following. It is affordable, widely available, and it actually delivers on strong hold.

Fair warning: it can be a little tricky to use at first. The texture is thick and it has minimal conditioning ingredients, so if you use too much you might experience some flaking. Start small and build up as you go. It is also a good idea to pair it with something more conditioning underneath, like a leave-in or a lightweight curl cream.

One tip that made a huge difference for me: before applying it to your hair, put it on your palms, spray a little water on your hands and rub them together. This helps spread the product more evenly and makes every bit of it count.

2. Bouclème Super Hold Styler

Out of all the gels on this list, this one has the thinnest texture and is the most conditioning. It is also on the lighter end of the hold spectrum compared to the others here, so I would not call it a true standalone gel if your hair needs serious support.

That said, when I layer it over a foam, my curls absolutely last beyond day 1. It works really beautifully as part of a layered routine, and it is a great option if you want hold without your hair feeling too stiff or dry.

3. Curl Bites Mega Definition Strong Hold Gel

I almost always use this one paired with the Curl Bites Volume and Hold Scrunching Gel for maximum hold, but even on its own it gives you great definition and results. The texture is thick but not as thick as the Giovanni, which means it is a little less drying and easier to work through the hair.

If you want the most out of this gel, layer it on top of a lightweight leave-in, and for even more staying power, try combining it with the Curl Bites scrunching gel (medium hold) first. That two-step system is seriously unbeatable for multi-day hold.

4. Innersense I Create Hold

This is one of my favorites on the list. The texture is thick but it does not dry your hair out, which is not always easy to find in a strong hold gel. It is also made with clean, organic ingredients like aloe vera and honey, so it holds and nourishes at the same time.

If you are someone who loves strong hold but hates that stiff, crunchy feeling, this one is worth trying. It gives you a firm cast that scrunches out beautifully into soft, defined curls.

5. CurlSmith Fragrance Free Strong Hold Gel

I actually tried the original version (Shine Strong Hold Gel) but that line has already been discontinued. I used it on a trip to Indonesia and my curls held up through the entire day in serious humidity. If your curls do not puff out within the first few hours in that kind of climate, that is already a win!

The good news is that CurlSmith released a Fragrance Free line with very similar ingredients to the original Shine version, so you can still get those results. It is also completely fragrance free, which makes it a great option if your scalp is on the sensitive side.

Using a strong hold gel can feel intimidating at first, especially if you have never worked with one before. But once you find the right one for your hair and get it into your routine, you will wonder how you ever styled your curls without it.
