The five best strong-hold gels to keep your wavy or curly hair looking great all week long
Whenever someone comes to me complaining that their waves or curls barely last through the first day, the first thing I ask is: “Do you use gel?” Usually, the answer is no. And the other times, the answer is yes, but the gel just isn’t strong enough to keep those curls in place.
That was my mistake, too, when I first started taking care of my naturally wavy, curly hair. I was so focused on caring for my hair and making it soft (which I eventually succeeded in doing!) that I completely lost sight of the need for hold. Without a product that actually keeps your curl pattern in place, your hairstyle just won’t hold.
That’s why today I’m sharing five strong-hold gels that have really transformed my wavy, curly hair. I’ve tested them all myself, and they’ve given me amazing results. And although the prices vary, the hold is similarly strong with all of these products.
1. Giovanni L.A. Hold Styling Gel
This was the first strong-hold gel I've ever tried, and there's a reason why this gel has achieved cult status. It's affordable, widely available, and really does provide a strong hold.
Just a heads-up: it can be a little tricky to use at first. The texture is thick, and the product contains very few conditioning ingredients, so if you use too much, it can cause flaking. Start with a small amount and gradually build up your usage. It’s also a good idea to use something more nourishing underneath it, like a leave-in conditioner or a light curl cream.
Here’s a tip that made a huge difference for me: first apply the product to the palms of your hands, spray a little water on them, and rub your hands together. This helps you distribute the product more evenly and get the most out of it.
2. Bouclème Super Hold Styler
Of all the gels on this list, this one has the lightest texture and is the most nourishing. It’s also on the lighter side in terms of hold compared to the other gels here, so I wouldn’t call it a true “standalone” gel if your hair needs really strong hold.
That said, when I apply a thin layer of this product, my curls definitely last longer than a day. It works really well as part of a multi-step routine, and it’s a great choice if you want hold without making your hair feel too stiff or dry.
3. Curl Bites Mega Definition Strong Hold Gel
I almost always use this product in combination with the Curl Bites Volume and Hold Scrunching Gel for maximum hold, but even on its own, it provides great definition and beautiful results. The texture is thick, but not as thick as Giovanni’s, so it’s slightly less drying and easier to work through the hair.
If you want to get the most out of this gel, apply it on top of a light leave-in conditioner. And for even longer-lasting hold, you can first combine it with the Curl Bites scrunching gel (medium hold). That two-step system is truly unbeatable for hold that lasts several days.
4. Innersense I Create Hold
This is one of my favorites on the list. It has a thick texture, but it doesn't dry out your hair—which isn't always easy to find in a strong-hold gel. Plus, it's made from pure, organic ingredients like aloe vera and honey, so it provides hold while nourishing your hair at the same time.
If you like strong hold but hate that stiff, crunchy feeling, then this product is definitely worth a try. It provides a firm hold that curls beautifully into soft, well-defined curls.
5. CurlSmith Fragrance-Free Strong Hold Gel
I tried the original version (Shine Strong Hold Gel) once, but that line is no longer available. I used it during a trip to Indonesia, and my curls stayed in place all day, even in extremely humid conditions. If your curls don’t start to frizz out within a few hours in a climate like that, that’s already a victory!
The good news is that CurlSmith has launched a fragrance-free line with ingredients very similar to those in the original Shine version, so you can still achieve the same results. What’s more, the products are completely fragrance-free, making them an excellent choice if you have a sensitive scalp.
Using a strong-hold gel can be a little intimidating at first, especially if you've never used one before. But once you've found the right gel for your hair and incorporated it into your routine, you'll wonder how you ever styled your curls without it.
