HOW HARD WATER DAMAGES YOUR WAVY / CURLY HAIR, AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT

Ever wonder, you have done everything right, bought the right products for your hair, done the 2 to 3 hour wash day, only for your results to still be frizzy?
You need to look into your water.
Hard water is full of minerals, chlorine and heavy metals that strip the natural oils from your hair and skin. Over time it breaks down the amino acids in your hair, which depletes its natural strength. It dissolves the lipids that keep your hair shiny. It can even react with the melanin in your hair and slowly change your color.
For wavy and curly hair specifically, this means frizz, dullness, loss of definition and curls that just won't hold no matter what you do. And the frustrating part is that none of your products can fix it, because the problem starts before any product even touches your hair.
There are two ways to deal with this. The first is a chelating shampoo. Chelating is different from clarifying. Where clarifying removes product buildup, chelating specifically targets the minerals from hard water. The downside is you have to keep using it consistently, otherwise the buildup comes right back. It also does nothing for your skin.
I used to use a chelating shampoo in the past. My favorite is the Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Shampoo.
The second option is installing a water filter directly on your shower head, which tackles the problem at the source before the water even touches you. Personally, I use the Jolie Filtered Shower Head.
Since I started using it, my hair is noticeably softer, shinier and my curls hold so much better. If you decide to get one, it is very easy to install yourself. Here is what comes in the box:

A how-to guide
No extra tools or a plumber needed. The filter needs to be replaced every 90 days and you can set up a subscription so it arrives automatically without having to think about it. It also comes in five finishes so it actually looks good in your bathroom, and they offer free 60 day returns so there is no risk in trying it.
One thing worth mentioning though: if your waves or curls are very soft, a water filter might actually be counterintuitive for you. Curls need a little grit and texture to hold their shape and last longer. So keep that in mind.
