BEST 5 WAVY CURLY HAIR DRYERS / DIFFUSERS I'VE PERSONALLY TESTED (FROM CHEAPEST TO MOST EXPENSIVE)
Not all diffusers are created equal. I have used quite a few of them, and even though they can look similar at first glance, the experience is completely different depending on what you are looking for: budget, drying speed, build quality, or versatility. Here are five I have personally tested, from the most affordable to the biggest investment.
1. Tymo AirHype Lite | ~$100
Small, light, and easy to handle. It took my medium density, chest-length hair about 20 minutes to dry, which is average. Nothing groundbreaking, but it does the job. If you are looking for an affordable high-speed dryer that is compact and easy to travel with, this is a solid starting point.
2. Laifen Swift | ~$140
A good mid-range option that does exactly what it promises. For my hair, drying time was also around 20 minutes, so speed-wise it is comparable to the Tymo. It comes with the hairdryer, a diffuser attachment, and a concentrator nozzle, which is a great package for the price.
One thing to know: the diffuser is detachable and not robust enough, and mine cracked after dropping it once. So if you are a little reckless with your tools (I am guilty of this too), just keep that in mind. The good news is the dryer itself still works perfectly with a universal diffuser attachment.
3. Shark FlexStyle | ~$300
This one is for you if you love switching up your look and not just wearing your hair curly. The full attachment set gives you air curlers, a diffuser, brushes, and more at a much more accessible price point than the Dyson. The diffuser nozzle is big and can hold a lot of hair at once, which speeds things up nicely.
Drying time is quite fast too. The one thing I will be honest about: it is loud. If you have a sleeping baby or a pet nearby, this might not be your best friend. But for what you pay and everything you get with it, I absolutely recommend it. And not gonna lie I am a little biased because I love using the air curlers on this one.
4. GHD Speed | ~$399
The price is in the same range as the Dyson, but honestly I prefer this one. It is a bit heavier than the others I have tested, but I do not mind it. What matters more is the performance: it dried my hair in under ten minutes, which is really impressive. It also runs cooler than the Dyson, which is a big plus if you have fine or low density hair that can easily get overheated.
5. Dyson Supersonic | ~$429+
The most expensive on this list, and as a stylist, it is also the one I reach for most in my home salon. The speed is unmatched: even on clients with high density, thick hair, the Dyson diffuses everything in 10 to 15 minutes max. Time is everything when you have clients back to back. It is a lot lighter compared to GHD.
That said, it does run hot, even on the lowest heat setting. If you have low density hair, I would not rush to buy this unless heat sensitivity is not a concern for you. In my salon I use the lowest heat setting for finer/lower density hair and medium heat for high density. The magnetic diffuser attachment is convenient but does have a habit of dropping off, which I have learned to live with. What I will say is that this thing is incredibly durable: I have dropped the diffuser more times than I can count and it still works perfectly.
Whichever one you choose, diffusing your wash day correctly can make such a difference in how long your curls last and how much volume you get!
